CHARLOTTE AMALIE, St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands –September 20, 2024 – Virgin Islands Economic Development Authority (VIEDA) CEO Wayne Biggs Jr. is featured in USA TODAY’s special report on the U.S. Virgin Islands, titled “Building a Diversified, Sustainable, and Resilient Caribbean Paradise”. The report highlights the economic transformation efforts underway in the USVI, with a focus on activities geared toward implementing Vision 2040, the Territory’s 20-year economic development strategy.
In his interview, CEO Biggs discusses the objectives of Vision 2040, underscoring the Territory’s dedication to diversifying its economy by focusing on critical industries like manufacturing, technology, and tourism. He stresses that the success of Vision 2040 relies heavily on expanding the workforce and fostering population growth. To achieve this, Biggs emphasizes the need to strengthen the labor pool by encouraging Virgin Islanders in the diaspora to return and contribute to the Territory’s economic future.
“We’re open for business and it’s a good place to invest,” Biggs states as he highlights the benefits of the USVI’s robust tax incentive programs, infrastructural enhancements, and diverse business opportunities. He also pointed to the recent completion of a shipyard feasibility study for St. Croix, which confirmed the viability of constructing a shipyard capable of servicing vessels ranging from 164 feet to 574 feet. This project is anticipated to significantly boost the local economy, create jobs, and further enhance the maritime industry in the Territory.
The comprehensive report also includes insights from other private and public partners, such as the Virgin Islands Port Authority, VIEDC beneficiaries, Viya, and local insurance companies, all contributing to the Territory’s ongoing economic development.
