On behalf of the VIEDA Board of Directors, management and staff, I also join the USVI community in sharing my sincere condolences to Mary Ottley (our former VIEDA colleague), the family, friends and the WSTA 1340AM family of Athniel “Addie” C. Ottley.
Addie truly embodied the characteristics of a leader that certainly inspired others to dream, learn, do and become more. And with the heart of a U.S. Virgin Islander, Addie was truly committed to serving his community in several roles, whether it was through his service as a USVI senator and Lieutenant Governor, his relationships within the business community, his adoption of the 4th grade class at the Leonard Dober Elementary School on St. Thomas, or through his deep connection with dedicated listeners – in the USVI and abroad – of the ever-popular radio program, “The Morning Show with Addie Ottley”, on WSTA 1340AM, often described as, “The Peoples Station”.
The VIEDA team and I will truly miss his spirited conversations during his morning show and on the local TV program on WTJX, “Face to Face”, which featured – and engaged the attention of – several Virgin Islanders and visitors from abroad. We will especially remember his consistent anticipation to work alongside our VIEDA team to engage in conversations about economic development initiatives; and broadcast live VIEDA events and activities such as the Enterprise Zone Commission’s annual Open House during Carnival season on St. Thomas and the Ag Fair on St. Croix, the 2021 Farmers and Fishers Conference and the “Made in the USVI” Pop-Up Shops for small manufacturers, to name a few.
His voice on the airwaves at WSTA 1340AM was one of jovial conversations for entertainment, and a voice for clear transmission of information to our community. And it was often a voice of reason and calm during many of the most challenging times our Territory has ever endured.
May Addie’s family, members of the WSTA 1340AM radio station and our community continue to be uplifted in prayer as we receive the love and comfort only the Holy Spirit can provide.
